Sensory Play is a sensory activity library for children from birth to about four. Every idea here is sorted two ways: by age, and by how much mess it makes.

The mess rating

That second filter is the one we have not seen elsewhere, and it is the reason the site exists. Sensory play is genuinely valuable for developing motor skills, language and focus — but “put rice in a tray” is not helpful advice at 8am on a weekday in a carpeted flat. Rating activities by mess level lets you match the activity to the day you are actually having.

What we publish

Activities grouped by age and stage, indoor and rainy-day options, budget ideas using what is already in the kitchen cupboard, printables and checklists, and routines for fitting play into a day that already has too much in it.

We also write about the awkward phases — the child who will not touch anything wet, the one who eats the materials, the sensory-averse toddler — because those are common and rarely covered. Setup and cleanup times are estimates from doing the activities, not optimistic guesses.
